The Health Benefits Of The Echinacea Supplement
One of the most popular herbs in America today is the medicinal plant called echinacea. Named for the bristly scales in its large conical seed head, the herb resembles the spines of an angry hedgehog (echinos is Greek for hedgehog).
Native Americans may have used echinacea for more than 400 years to treat infections and wounds and as a general “panacea”. Echinacea has three species that are commonly used: Echinacea angustifolia , Echinacea pallida , and Echinacea purpurea. Every brand has its own preparation and can sometimes contain one, two, or even all three of these species and different parts of the plant.
Taking the herbal remedy echinacea can more than halve the risk of catching a common cold, US researchers say. They found it decreased the odds of developing a cold by 58% and the duration of colds by a day-and-a-half.
Several laboratory and animal studies suggest that echinacea contains active substances that improve the activity of the immune system, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and have hormonal, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. For this reason, professional herbalists may advise echinacea to treat urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast (candida) infections, ear infections (also known as otitis media), athlete’s foot, sinusitis, hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis), as well as slow-healing wounds.
It’s important not to use echinacea longer then 2 or 3 weeks in a row.
For general immune system stimulation, during colds, flu, upper respiratory tract infections, or bladder infections, you can use one of the following forms:
- dried root or herb, as tea
- standardized tincture extract
- powdered extract containing 4% phenolics
- Tincture (1:5): 1 to 3 mL
- Stabilized fresh extract: 0.75 mL (15 to 23 drops)
