Antioxidants | High Potency Nutrition That Fight Free Radicals
Oxygen is the most important element for a human being but unfortunately it can also be to blame for cell damage and early aging caused by oxygen-containing ‘free-radicals’ that are natural by-products of the body’s metabolism. This damage is called oxidation.
The best way to explain oxidation is when you cut an avocado it will turn brow, this is because it is exposed to air but when you add some lemon juice on the avocado it will stay green. This is because the juice of the lemon acts as an antioxidant.
The same thing happens in your body. Antioxidants or anti-oxidation agents are “mopping up” free radicals, meaning they neutralize dangerous oxidants by binding together with these dangerous molecules. This way the body keeps its balance.
Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, vitamins C, E, and A, selenium and other substances.
This only works if there are enough antioxidants in the body. The problem these days is that most people don’t get enough antioxidant. There are a couple of reasons for this. First one is bad eating habits. Second would be that we are having stress, pollution, pesticides and radiation which also cause free radicals.
If there are not enough antioxidants health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, etc. can occur. Antioxidants also help reduce inflammation, keep arteries flexible and preserve the genetic material against mutation. As you understand it’s very important to have enough of these nutrients. This can be done through food. Choosing raw fruits and vegetables instead of cooked for the reason that they provide the highest concentration and best absorption of antioxidants. They can also be found in nuts, grains and some fresh meats, poultry and fish.
Getting enough antioxidants through food alone can be complicated that’s why it is helpful to use a dietary supplement for the times you do not consume enough antioxidant-producing foods.
